Market vendors in Maryland County are planning to strike today, March 2, 2026, in protest of increased tickets and annual registration fees imposed by the Liberia Marketing Association.

According to them, ticket fees went up from 20 LD to 50 LD, while annual registration fee increased from 1200 LD to 2000 LD, something the vendors claimed the changes  agreed upon at a recent convention in Gbarnga, Bong County, are not in their best interest.

Highlighting on the changes made on Saturday, February 28, 2026, Market Superintendent, Cecelia N. Wilson, said the local office cannot reduce the fees without direction from the head office in Monrovia.

She quoted her bosses as  noting that the changes made in the fees are intended to increase LMA workers salaries and undertake market projects, such as modern latrines for vendors, sufficient hand tools to observe hygiene practices, additional security officers, among others.

Ahead of the strike action, Madam Wilson has urged calm and peaceful protest, reminding vendors to follow the law and use the right channels, citing “Liberia law is the law,” as she emphasized the importance of respecting the rules and procedures that govern the country.

Representing the group,  Chris Walker, head for traditional women in Maryland County, and now district inspector warned that if the fees are not reduced, vendors will proceed with a peaceful demonstration.

She urged the Liberia Marketing Association to reconsider, citing poor market conditions and lack of services.

The group has already petitioned a formal communication to local government officials including Pleebo City Mayor Geekor.

The vendors are said to be united, and the strike is expected to disrupt markets in Harper and Pleebo in the coming days.

Meanwhile, residents are stocking up foodstuffs just in case the strike action happens to avoid future eventuality.
