The Ministry of Mines and Energy has confirmed the arrest of one Abraham Gbogar, age 40, for impersonating as the Minister of Mines and Energy, Wilmot Paye.
Gbogar, according to a release, has attempted defrauding a Class ‘C’ miner, identified as Peter Logan of a targeted amount of US$5,000, using his scam to acquire a Class ‘B’ License.
A release said, the suspect reportedly wanted the amount in the name of granting Mr. Logan a Class ‘B’ Mining License, but did not succeed.
State security officers arrested suspect Gbogar on Monday, May 12, 2025, in the evening hour at the Duport Road junction.
Shorty following his arrest, suspect Gbogar reportedly informed security investigating team that he is an employee of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, but was sorry for the act.
He then apologized for impersonating as Wilmot Paye, the Minister of Mines and Energy.
For the victim of the Gbogar’s scam, a Class ‘C’ Miner from Rivercess County, the suspect was aiming to defraud him of US$5,000 to ensure he gets a Class ‘B’ mining License.
“But being fully aware of Mr. Paye’s firm stance on moral rectitude and integrity in public service, I became skeptical to release the requested amount to Gbogar’s emissary. I only gave the person US$50 as transportation fare.” Logan admitted.
Meanwhile, the ministry said it has distanced itself from “any and all acts of soliciting money from anyone for any license process.”
It added: “Application procedures and acquisition of all categories of mining licenses are clearly indicated in the Minerals and Mining Law, and the accompanying Regulations.”
