THE ENACTMENT OF law to establish the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission-dubbed ‘LACC’ is accredited to the regime of Madam Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. It remains the sole purpose of fighting vices in Liberia’s governance system, which has suffered decadence of dishonesty and gross abuse of power by public officials from one regime to another in the past.
THE LACC SHOULD stand as a symbol of trust and confidence in every fight against any corrupt act that can be identified; made true and well noted for prosecution to discourage economic vampires, whose interest lies in deliberately diverting state resources and finances into their personal benefits.
AS ITS FUNCTIONS depict, LACC as anti- graft institution must have integrity-oriented personnel, void of stains and biases in pursuit of shaming and naming corrupt officials who use taxpayers’ monies to enrich themselves at the detriment of the state and its subjects.
THE PUBLIC EXPECTS no suspicions within the inner circle of the LACC of manipulations or selective justice in the fight against corruption, no matter who is involved in the acts of established malpractices, whether financial or otherwise.
UNFORTUNATELY, IN THE wake of the exodus of defiant government officials to the LACC to declare their assets, following one month of suspension without pay ordered by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, coupled with scores of suspensions of other public officials, suspicions have aroused in the public domain of selective vindications being made which could erode the credibility of the LACC.
OUR BEST GUESS is no suspicion of this kind should be true because such attempt would render the LACC insignificant in fighting corruption in Liberia. The LACC needs to see itself as a beacon of hope for integrity, transparency and accountability in our current political dispensation where championing good governance practices cannot be overstated.
THEREFORE, WE ENCOURAGE the LACC to maintain its uprightness in fighting corruption, bearing in mind that all personnel of the ant- graft institution are under spotlight to showcase commitment, dedication, patriotism and nationalism to ensuring that public officials transcend ill-gutted wealth and gross abuse of power.
