The Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation (LWSC) has officially broken ground to construct the first-ever pipe-borne water system in Pleebo Sodoken District, Maryland County.
The project hailed as a historic milestone for the county commercial hub.
The groundbreaking ceremony, held on Saturday, October 25, 2025, brought together citizens, local government officials, and community leaders, who pledged their support and cooperation toward the successful implementation of the project.
LWSC Deputy Managing Director, Timothy Wilson Gaye, expressed optimism that the long-awaited water project would significantly improve public health and sanitation in the region.
Gaye led the delegation to the county along Senator James P. Binney and Superintendent Henry Cole.
He said the Thunder Construction Company International, which is to undertake the project, has valued the project at US$1 million.
Engineers from the LWSC will be stationed at the site to supervise the construction.
Mr. Gaye meanwhile, called on residents to collaborate fully with the engineers, and LWSC supervisors to ensure smooth execution.
“This is not just about bringing water, but to transform lives. When completed, this project will provide clean and safe drinking water to thousands of residents, who have depended for years on unsafe handpumps and streams.”
Mr. Gaye added that the project aligns with government’s commitment to expand access to safe drinking water, and sanitation services in the county, particularly in the rural area.
For decades, residents of Pleebo City have struggled with poor access to clean water, relying mainly on shallow wells, and unprotected streams that often become contaminated during the rainy season.
Health authorities in the area have consistently reported increases in waterborne diseases such as cholera, typhoid, and diarrhea, especially among children.
Superintendent Henry Cole commended LWSC for prioritizing Maryland County in its development drive.
“This project brings hope to Pleebo. It is a clear demonstration that development is reaching all corners of Liberia.”
