LTA Leads Gov’t ‘Free National Health Insurance’ Launch

The Joseph Nyuma Boakai-led government has resolved to launch the National Health Insurance Scheme.

The exercise, which the Liberia Telecommunication Authority (LTA) will lead, is part of government’s effort to make healthcare delivery affordable to low income earners, the physically- challenged and the entire citizenry.

The planned, which was first announced by the president during his state of the nation address in January, 2025, will be implemented by the management of the LTA, in collaboration with the, Digital Transformation Project.

In a release, the entity acting Chairperson said, the scheme will kick off with a pilot project to be launched simultaneously in three counties, including Montserrado, Bomi, and Margibi on July 1, 2025.

Mr. Abdulai Kamara, said the process will be sponsored by the LTA, and will last for only six months, covering up to 5000 people, including the cripple, blind, dumbs and other challenged Liberians at the group of ‘77’ on Newport Street, Monrovia.

In an interview with this newspaper Mr. Kamara emphasized that thereafter, a new policy will be drawn in which every Liberian will be covered under the National Health Insurance Scheme.

He disclosed further that the National Insurance Company of Liberia, (NICOL), will serve as executing agency of the scheme using modern technology for the coverage.

He said the use of technology will help strengthen accountability in the system and give government an insight into the work of the scheme.
