The Acting Chairperson of the Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA), Abdullah L. Kamara has engaged in a high-level discussion with the Secretary General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Madam Doreen Bogdan-Martin, amid efforts to boost Liberia’s telecommunications sector,
The two officials met and held discussions during the World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly (WTSA) in New Delhi, India, according to a statement from the LTA issued Tuesday October 24, 2024.
According to the statement, Mr. Kamara, emphasized the urgent need for Liberia to take a more active role in global telecommunications while advocating for tailored capacity-development programs to propel the nation into the digital age.
As part of Liberia’s efforts to enhance its telecom infrastructure and capabilities, the release added that Kamara sought avenues for capacity-building initiatives to position the country competitively on the international stage.
Additionally, Kamara announced that Liberia had granted temporary licensing to Starlink, a satellite internet provider, to improve connectivity in remote regions of the country, noting that this move is seen as a crucial step in bridging the digital divide in underserved areas.
Meanwhile, Madam Bogdan-Martin welcomed the discussions and expressed her commitment to collaborating on initiatives that would strengthen Liberia’s digital infrastructure.
She also highlighted the importance of working together on a framework to address key challenges, including project financing, regulatory policies, and infrastructure development.
The conversation further delved into ambitious plans for e-government initiatives aimed at improving citizens’ access to public services, marking a potential leap in the country’s digital transformation.
The assembly which runs from October 15 to 24, 2024, brought together global leaders in telecommunications.
The WTSA, held every four years, sets the agenda for the ITU’s standardization work in telecommunications over the next study period.
The assembly provides an opportunity for heads of national telecommunications bodies to share insights and strategies to advance the global telecom sector. LINA
