LOIC Seeks More Funding As Youth Enrollment Hits 257

By Samuel Flomo, Jr.

The Gbarnga Satellite Campus of the Liberia Opportunities Industrialization Center (LOIC), has renewed its appeal for increased funding from Bong County authorities.

The entity cited growing enrollment in its vocational training programs.

Program Manager Rachel J. Paye, commended the Bong County Council for its ongoing support.

Madam Paye noted that its intervention has enabled many young people to achieve technical and vocational education.

The program has more recently, enrolled 257 youths under the county’s scholarship scheme.

The scheme focuses on equipping participants with practical skills for employment and self-reliance.

Madam Paye said, the institution has prepared to graduate about 206 students from its long-term training programs, a move expected to positively impact livelihoods.

LOIC offers a range of long-term courses, including electricity, general construction, computer studies, cosmetology, auto mechanics and home economics.

In addition, short-term programs such as soap-making are available to provide participants with quick, income-generating opportunities.

Despite the gains, Madam Paye highlighted funding constraints as a major obstacle.

She explained that the initial allocation of US$10,000 is insufficient to meet the growing demand, noting that some program costs consume a substantial portion of the budget.

She has therefore called on the County Council to increase the entity’s financial strength.

Madam Paye said, enhanced funding would expand training opportunities, strengthen youth empowerment, and contribute to broader development efforts.

“Investing in skills training is investing in the future of our young people and the prosperity of our communities.”
