Liberia will on Friday, May 1, join the global community in observing this year’s international Law Day.
The Day is an annual event celebrated on the first Friday of May, with activities designed to promote respect for the rule of law.
Members of the Liberia National Bar Association (LNBA) are meanwhile, spearheading the celebrations.
They highlighted the importance of legal education, the rights and responsibilities of citizens under the law.
At a press conference over the weekend, Elisha Forkeyoh, Secretary of the LNBA, detailed the agenda for the upcoming celebration, highlighting its role in fostering a better understanding of legal principles among Liberians.
“Our aim is to educate citizens about their rights and responsibilities, ensuring they are aware of the tools available to them under the law.”
This year’s Law Day activities will gather a diverse group of stakeholders, including high school and university students, government officials, officers of the security sector, and representatives from various academic institutions.
Invitations have been sent to key organizations such as the Ministry of Education and the Liberia National Police, reflecting the event’s inclusive nature.
The gathering will serve as a platform to discuss the critical role of law in society, and to reinforce the adherence to the rule of law throughout the country.
Forkeyoh expressed optimism about the event’s potential to strengthen community ties, and raise awareness about legal issues affecting citizens.
A highlight of the celebration will be a street parade, set to take place from EWA Junction to the Paynesville City Hall.
The parade aims to engage the public and promote the importance of respecting, and upholding the law in daily life.
Kula Fofana, Secretary General of the Bar, described the event as an opportunity to foster a deeper understanding of law among all Liberians. “Obedience to the law is essential for building a peaceful and orderly society.”
This year’s Law Day theme: “Access to Justice for All, Bridging the Gap Between the Law and the People,” underscores the necessity of making the legal system more accessible and responsive to the needs of ordinary citizens.
Organizers believe that this theme resonates with the ongoing efforts to ensure that justice is not just a privilege for the few, but a right accessible to all.
As Liberia prepares for this important celebration, LNBA encourages all citizens to participate actively and engage in discussions that will promote a culture of respect for the law.
