The Liberia Intellectual Property Office (LIPO), in collaboration with the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, is today, April 23, 2025, hosting a high-level Intellectual Property (IP) Conference in Monrovia.
The event marks the first phase of national activities commemorating World Intellectual Property Day, observed globally on April 26 each year.
LIPO Director General Garmai Koboi told scores of journalists at the Ministry of Information regular press briefing on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, that the conference is being held under the theme: “The Role of Intellectual Property and the Creative Sector in Achieving the ARREST Agenda Under Program Seven.”
Madam Koboi said the gathering is a strategic move by the government to integrate intellectual property into the country’s national development agenda.
“This event demonstrates our commitment under Section 7 of the ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development,” said Madam Koboi.
The ARREST Agenda an acronym for Agriculture, Roads, Rule of Law, Education, Sanitation and Tourism serves as the backbone of the country’s national development vision.
Madam Koboi described intellectual property as a critical enabler across all six pillars.
“In agriculture, IP helps transform raw commodities into value-added products with unique identities that fetch higher prices; in education, it ensures that creators benefit from their works, thus promoting innovation.”
She further highlighted the relevance of IP in tourism and culture, noting that protecting Liberia’s music, traditional crafts and natural heritage can turn these assets into economic opportunities.
“This conference is not just a policy dialogue, but a national call to action, recognizing that IP is the invisible force powering sustainable growth across the ARREST Agenda.”
The daylong event features a National IP Policy Address, statements from senior government officials and development partners, as well as a panel discussion exploring how IP and the creative sector contribute to national progress.
The celebrations will be climaxed on April 26 at Invisible Park in Montserrado County with a public event dubbed: “Musical Jamboree and IP Awareness Festival.”
It will combine cultural performances, music and educational outreach to promote respect for IP rights among the public.
World Intellectual Property Day is celebrated annually to recognize the power of innovation and creativity in driving human advancement.
