Liberia’s United Methodist Church Going Gay?

Amidst ongoing standoff amongst United Methodist Church members in Liberia over Gay doctrine, the Bishop of the Liberia Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church (LAC/UMC), Samuel J. Quire, Jr. has denounced that the UMC is a gay Church, lest to mention that  they will  ever adopt such identity. Addressing a news conference Monday, October 14, 2024 in Monrovia, Bishop Quire asserted that as members of the United Methodist Church in Liberia, they firmly uphold the definition of marriage as a sacred union between one man and one woman, stating that nothing more and nothing less. “This belief is deeply rooted in our interpretation of Biblical teachings, our cultural values, and our shared commitment to upholding marriage as a union between a man and a woman,” he said. According to him, the issue of same sex marriage has been lingering in Liberia since his return from their general conference which was held in the United States of America between April to May 2024. Accordingly, upon his arrival in the country, he cautioned all United Methodists to remain calm while at the same time informing them about decisions that were made at the gathering in the US related to Gay identity. “When I returned in the country, I had a press conference, and today it beholds me as the Bishop of the LAC/UMC to address the press, people call United Methodist, the Christian Community and citizens of Liberia. I want to say here that as a UMC Bishop,  the UMC in Liberia is not a gay Church,” he asserted. He said what unfolded at two of their local churches in New Georgia and Seventy-second communities on Sunday, October 13, 2024, was as a result of falsehood. Bishop Quire noted that it was widespread rumored among members of the UMC that he was going at the New Georgia UMC to preform same sex marriage, something which is untrue.  “This kind of rumor spread throughout the hold area and the country at large, and people were agitating and lots of things happened,” he said. Accordingly, the Liberia National Police (LNP) Inspector General, Gregory Coleman, who happens to be a UMC member, invited them to the LNP headquarters so they can find a way to resolve the situation. “Today we met the police IG, and we were in the meeting for almost three hours. After the IG made a statement on behalf of the state, then he excused the rest of the people and said let us remain as UMC members and discuss UMC issues,” he said. The UMC Bishop maintained that the LAC/UMC is not a gay church and that it will never practice or conduct and gay wedding, nor will they ordain people who are gays. Bishop Quire indicated that he will never scribe to gay marriage as being reported in every street corner of the country. “Here after, we do not want for members or anybody to get in the street to say that the UMC is a gay church. We are not a gay church, and this is something that is against the constitution of Liberia, he noted. According to him, the church does not license people to get married, but it is the state who gives out certificates to people to go ahead and carry out their wedding ceremonies. “I want people to know this because by the time they hear that they are performing same sex marriage over there, the first thing that should come to your mind is that, is the government giving license to gay people now? Because it is the government through the registry that gives out license to people to get married and they will never give two men or two women licenses,” he said.  Macpherson C.
