The Grand Mufti of Liberia, Sheikh Abubakar Sumaworo, has reiterated his longstanding appeal for the establishment of a national holiday for Muslims, a request that dates back to 1984.
Speaking on March 30, 2025, at the conclusion of Ramadan prayers on Gurley Street in Monrovia.
Sheikh Sumaworo expressed gratitude to President Joseph NyumaBoakai for his continuous support of the Muslim community.
The Liberian leader recently donated 5,000 bags of rice and other materials to assist in Ramadan observances.
“We appreciate President Joseph N. Boakai for his generous contribution to the Muslim community during this holy month of Ramadan,” Sheikh Sumaworo stated.
“We have been appealing for a national holiday for decades, and we strongly believe that President Boakai will consider this request in the spirit of inclusivity and national unity.”
The Grand Mufti also commended the government for ensuring security for Muslims throughout the fasting period, emphasizing the importance of peace and stability in the country.
According to Sheikh Sumaworo, the appeal for a Muslim public holiday has been presented to past administrations, including those of former Presidents Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and George Weah, but remains unfulfilled.
“We now turn to President Boakai to put smiles on the faces of Muslims in Liberia,” he asserted. “We urge all Muslims to remain united, especially during this period of Ramadan, and to continue fostering peace and harmony.”
Sheikh Sumaworo further cautioned Muslims against misinformation on social media and encouraged them to follow their religious leaders in promoting unity and reflection.
“This is a time for reflection and unity. We should listen to our religious leaders and work together for the common good,” he added.
The Grand Mufti also extended his gratitude to all Muslims who observed the fast and encouraged them to remain steadfast in their faith.
As part of the Ramadan conclusion, Sheikh Sumaworo officially declared March 30, 2025, as Eid al-Fitr, marking the end of fasting for Muslims across Liberia.
The Supreme Fatwa Council of Liberia urged all Muslims to observe this significant day with prayer and reflection.
Eid al-Fitr, known as the “Festival of Breaking the Fast,” is a time of joy and gratitude, celebrated globally by Muslims to mark the conclusion of the holy month of fasting.
Sheikh Sumaworo’s announcement serves as an invitation for all Muslim communities in Liberia to come together in prayer on this important day.
In addition to religious observances, the Grand Mufti called on all political actors in the country to respect judicial decisions, emphasizing that national interest should take precedence over personal gains.
“We appeal to all parties to accept court rulings and move forward in the interest of peace,” he emphasized. “Liberia comes first, and we must all work together for a stronger and more unified nation.”
