Liberian Health Authorities:

Hiding Something?

Liberia’s health personnel, Paola Bedell was recently arrested and subjected to investigation for releasing ‘fake Ebola outbreak’ alert in the country. She was linked to the so-called fake Ebola outbreak alert through her WhatApps group chat.

Health Authorities Ministry of Health, John F. Kennedy and National Health Institute of Liberia vehemently frowned on a leaked audio recording attributed to Nurse  Bedell, reportedly released through their (nurses’ chat room) which later went viral on social media for public consumption.

The genesis of such sensitive health insecurity reportedly came against the backdrop of a health-related session held at the John F. Kennedy Hospital recently in Sinkor, which Nurse Bedell was said to be in attendance when participants were said to be forewarned how to attend to patients visiting hospitals, clinics and other health facilities in determination of diagnosing what their- incoming patients conditions may be.

The session came amid ravaging newest Ebola outbreak in Central Africa, particularly eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, the epic center of the disease, which has reportedly killed over two hundred people  and one thousand or more confirmed cases now being attended to by the World Health Organizations and other health experts to save lives and contain the spread of the disease.

Liberia’s health authorities have indicated that Nurse Bedell has acted in contravention of her profession and ethics by releasing the audio to the public, noting that she does not have the authority to do so. But while under investigation, she clarified that her intent was not political, rather it was meant to safeguard her professional colleagues who did not have the opportunity to attend the session’ that was why she posted the information through their group chat room.

Even though on professional and ethical grounds some Liberians seem to agree with health authorities that Nurse Bedell needed to be reprimanded for releasing such sensitive information to the public, there are other Liberians who come in defense of  the suspended nurse.

 Gbawou Kowou Defends Nurse Bedell

A well known Liberian security expert- Gbawou Kowou has come in strong defense of Nurse Bedell as indicated in his well tailored set piece through his post as follows:

“Paola Nyemade Bedell is not a criminal. She is a hero — a brave Liberian woman who chose conscience over silence at a moment when fear and uncertainty were growing. As a first responder and healthcare professional, she understands better than most of us the devastating consequences of delayed warnings and poor preparation. When she spoke out and urged caution among fellow nurses, she did what every responsible medical worker is trained to do: protect life first.

While others were busy managing politics, narratives, and public optics, Paola was thinking about human lives. She understood that if anything went wrong, it would be nurses and frontline healthcare workers standing directly in harm’s way. Her decision to warn others was not motivated by malice, attention, or politics. It came from duty, compassion, and courage.

Yet, for choosing humanity over silence, she was handcuffed, publicly humiliated, and treated like a dangerous criminal by people determined to make an example out of her.

But perhaps the deepest wound was not the handcuffs. It was the painful betrayal from the same society she was trying to protect. Watching people insult her, mock her, and celebrate her humiliation simply for raising concern must have been heartbreaking. Imagine dedicating your life to saving others, only to be condemned for trying to prevent harm. That pain cannot easily be measured.

Today, the dust is beginning to settle, and the truth is becoming impossible to ignore. The very government that rushed to disgrace her is now confirming the exact concerns she raised only days ago. The reality is sinking in quickly: Paola was never the enemy. She was sounding an alarm because she cared. And as history has shown time and time again, the truth may be delayed, attacked, or buried under propaganda for a while — but eventually, it rises.

Those who attacked Paola, ridiculed her character, and mocked those of us who defended her rights should find the courage to apologize. Not because it will erase the damage done, but because it is the decent and honorable thing to do.

And to every single person who stood with us, who refused to join the mob, who defended fairness and humanity even when it was unpopular — thank you. Your support has reminded Paola that she is not alone. Despite the wrongful suspension, despite the humiliation and emotional pain, she remains strong and in good spirits.

This chapter is difficult, yes, but difficult seasons do not last forever. Truth survives. Courage survives. And this too shall pass.”

Liberian Scientist Questions Ebola Alert Responses

Liberian scientist- Dr. Dougbeh Chris Nyan has not kept mute in adding his voice to concerns being raised over supposedly looming health crisis that is devastating Dr. Congo as a result of the newest Ebola germ.

Dr. Nyan has called for independent and comprehensive investigations into what he termed as a series of documented “false” Viral Hemorrhagic Fever (VHF) alerts issued in Liberia over the  past eight months.

According to a Liberian local daily- Heritage, Dr. Nyan has questioned the consistency, transparency, and accountability of Liberia’s public health response system. This inquiry followed the controversial arrest and suspension of Nurse Paolo Bedell after an internal precautionary voice note related to Ebola preparedness circulated publicly.

He argued that the controversy goes beyond one nurse or one leaked audio recording, revealing that Liberia has experienced multiple instances where alarming outbreak-related communications were officially circulated by health authorities, only for later investigations to reportedly confirm no Ebola, Marburg, or other VHF infections.

Dr. Nyan mentioned December 9, 2024  as the first major incident of such when Liberia’s Chief Medical Officer at the John F. Kennedy Hospital, JohnTamba, allegedly issued a memorandum warning to hospital staff about a suspected hemorrhagic fever outbreak in neighboring Sierra Leone , aimed at mobilizing hospital workers for emergency outbreak preparedness and response activities, but no outbreak was eventually confirmed.

Another instance which Dr. Nyan also cited reportedly took place on September 10, 2025, indicating an official memo reportedly issued by the Ministry of Health under Minister Louise Kpoto. The memo accordingly instructed health authorities in Maryland, River Gee, Grand Gedeh and Nimba Counties  to urgently respond to a suspected Viral Hemorrhagic Fever case in southeast Liberia.

This communication circulated was said to have widely heightened fear across several counties and reportedly led to the quarantine of close to twenty health workers before subsequent  testing by National health Institute of Liberia that detected no confirmation of the disease in question.

 Government’s Preparedness Measures Raise Concerns

While uncertainty looms as to whether there is actual Ebola established suspected cases in the Liberia currently, the recent parade of a record number of ambulances in Monrovia appears to have stirred panic and fear amongst the already wearied population.

 Legislative Concerns

Coincidently, the National Legislature, seemingly being concerned about social media accounts of the speculation of Ebola suspected cases in the country, cited health authorities for clarifications.

The authorities were said to have revealed 16 surveillance cases, followed by a budget request of 4.2 million United States Dollars for preparedness to combat any possible outbreak of the disease in the country. Of this proposed budget, a request of 500,000 United States Dollars has reportedly been made to procure PPEs for use by health workers in case of any eventuality.

 Growing Doubts

Meanwhile, observers remain doubtful over these developments, wondering if there is anything that health authorities are hiding for fear of panic especially so when Liberia in 2014 suffered the devastating effect of Ebola that ruined the country’s health sector with alarming death tolls at the time.
