Liberia’s Senate Pro-tempore Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence has championed Liberia’s bid for the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for non-permanent member seat, asserting that the country’s arduous path from conflict to peace has signified its full potential and readiness to contribute immensely to the Security Council’s work.”Our journey from the devastation of civil war to the restoration of democracy and stability has endowed us with a profound understanding of the necessity of peace, the value of justice, and the importance of inclusive governance”, Senate Pro-tempore Lawrence noted on September 27, 2024, when she made the case for Liberia’s bid for the non-permanent seat on the UNSC in New York. According to her, the country is a testament to the power of reconciliation and the strength of human spirit, stating that the people of Liberia are hell-bent to showcase this experience on the global stage, as she further called on other countries to see Liberia as an emblem of peace, a practice of good democratic tenet, and a country with so much perseverance in handling challenges. She rekindled her country’s readiness and preparedness to diligently serve and channel advocacy for smaller nations to abide by international humanitarian law and promised to collectively work with all member states to address multifaceted and prevailing challenges to global peace and security. “Today, we stand ready to serve, to advocate for smaller nations, to uphold international humanitarian law, and to work collaboratively with all member states to address complex and evolving challenges to global peace and security”, Madam Karnga-Lawrence said. “Liberia is committed to approaching this task with the utmost respect, responsibility and resolve, fully prepared to engage constructively as a proactive member of the Council”. She stated that the Liberian people seek for member states’ support not only for Liberia but for the vision all members share–a vision of a world where conflicts are resolved through dialogue, where justice prevails over injustice, and where peace is not just the absence of war but the presence of conditions that allow all people to thrive. “Liberia’s candidacy for the United Nations Security Council Non-Permanent Seat for the 2026/2027 is a testament to our belief in the power of multilateralism and our commitment to the principles of the United Nations. We stand ready to serve, to listen, and to lead in the pursuit of a Just and Peaceful World”, Senator Lawrence noted.
She also called on member states to work towards a Security Council that truly represents all nations, responsive to the needs of all people, and resolute in its commitment to peace and security. It can be recalled that Liberia became a member of the United Nations Security Council in 1961. When the country was hit by its civil strife, the United Nations hugely contributed to ending the civil conflict that ravaged the country. LINA
