Liberia secures $125M World Bank Agreements

-Targeting Three Sectors

Liberia has signed three financing agreements with the World Bank, totaling approximately $125 million, aimed at addressing critical infrastructure gaps in digital access, electricity, and road networks.

The agreements constitutes the following:

.$50M for Digital Initiatives: This funding will expand broadband access nationwide under the World Bank’s WARDIP program, focusing on enhancing rural connectivity, cybersecurity, e-commerce, and regional digital integration.

$57M for Energy: This additional financing for the RESPITE project will facilitate the expansion of the Mount Coffee Hydropower Plant, incorporating battery storage solutions to reduce power outages, aimed at improving Liberia’s low electricity access rate.

.$18M for Roads: The funding will support the South Eastern Corridor project, upgrading the 100 km Ganta-Zwedru Highway.

This project is expected to reduce travel time and costs while enhancing access to markets, healthcare, and educational facilities in the southeastern region.

Finance Minister Augustine Ngafuan described the signing as “a great day for Liberia,” commending the World Bank as a long-term partner in development.

He highlighted that energy will continue to be a “permanent resident” in the national budget. These agreements are part of President Boakai’s broader initiative to address infrastructure deficits that have hindered growth and public services since the end of the civil war in 2003.
