The money is to lobby for UN Security Council Seat, which the government has officially launched.
The US$1 million fundraising campaign is to support the country’s bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.
The announcement was made by MacDella Cooper,
The Senior Political Advisor to President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, MacDella Cooper, made the pronouncement during the Ministry of Information regular press briefing on Thursday, May 1, 2025.
Madam Cooper said the country is ready to step onto the global stage with a strong diplomatic presence. She has meanwhile called on all citizens to rally behind the campaign, regardless of political affiliation or social status.
“This is a national endeavor,” she added: “We are inviting every Liberian to join hands in this cause, our collective support is crucial.”
In a show of unity, the campaign committee has already reached out to prominent national figures, including former Ambassadors, former Presidents Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and George Weah to lend their voices and support to the initiative.
Cooper underscored Pres. Boakai’s commitment to peace, dialogue and national development, despite recent political rhetoric aimed at undermining the administration.
“The President remains focused on improving the lives of Liberians and fostering national unity,” she said.
“He will not be distracted by baseless criticism or personal attacks.”
She also cautioned against incitement from some former officials, urging them to think about the future of the country’s youth.
“Liberia belongs to all of us, we must preserve the peace we currently enjoy.
Everyone is entitled to free speech, but no one should jeopardize national stability simply because they are no longer in power,” she added.
Although she clarified that she is not the government’s official spokesperson, Madam Cooper said her message represents a personal appeal to all Liberians to embrace unity and patriotism.
“Our journalists, leaders, and ordinary citizens each have a role to play, let us come together to build the Liberia we envision,” she said.
The fundraising campaign is set to officially kick off at the Centennial Pavilion on Broad Street, Monrovia, on Saturday, May 3, 2025, under the theme, “All Roads Lead to New York.”
Cooper emphasized that Liberia’s bid for a Security Council seat is vital for the country’s global engagement and national development, highlighting the importance of international partnerships and shared initiatives.
