Liberia, China Strengthen Bilateral Cooperation on Climate Change

A Liberian delegation that recently participated in a two-week seminar on Climate Change and Sustainable Development in the People’s Republic of China has returned home with renewed commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation and advancing climate resilience initiatives in Liberia.

The seminar, held from May 8–21, 2026, in Beijing, focused on climate change adaptation and mitigation as well as sustainable development strategies among Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) countries.

The program highlighted China’s vision, policies, and practical approaches to environmental sustainability and economic development.

The Liberian delegation included representatives from the Forestry Development Authority (FDA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Ministry of Agriculture (MOA), and the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning (MFDP).

The delegation was led by FDA Deputy Managing Director for Commercial and Technical Services, Madam Gertrude Wede Korvayan Nyaley.

The seminar was organized by the National Academy of Forest and Grassland Administration (NAFGA) with support from the Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China.

Participants from eight BRI countries attended the forum, including Liberia, Argentina, The Gambia, Malaysia, Maldives, Namibia, Sierra Leone, and Solomon Islands.

Speaking on behalf of Liberia, Madam Nyaley described the experience as both educational and inspiring, particularly China’s ability to balance rapid development with innovation and environmental stewardship.

“The most inspiring part of the trip was witnessing how China combines development with innovation,” Madam Nyaley said.

She added: “From modern infrastructure to environmental initiatives, we saw firsthand how planning and commitment can transform a nation. It challenged us to think bigger about what is possible for Liberia.”

She further noted that the seminar provided participants with valuable theoretical and practical knowledge that could support Liberia’s development agenda and climate resilience efforts.

“The experience in China has given us a renewed commitment to use the knowledge, exposure, and inspiration gained to contribute positively to Liberia’s development and climate resilience,” she emphasized.

The Liberian delegation also expressed appreciation to the Government and People of China for sponsoring the seminar and providing hospitality during their stay in Beijing.

“On behalf of the Government and People of Liberia, we sincerely appreciate the People’s Republic of China through NAFGA for the sponsorship and accommodation provided during the seminar,” Madam Nyaley stated.

“We commend the staff and management of NAFGA for their professionalism and non-discriminatory treatment throughout our stay. We look forward to more opportunities as Liberia and China continue to foster bilateral cooperation.”

The seminar forms part of ongoing international efforts to strengthen collaboration among BRI countries in addressing climate change and promoting sustainable development.
