Chinese engineers are working side-by-side with young Liberians in Marshall City, Lower Margibi County, constructing the first-ever ship built on Liberian soil.
This latest development, according to views from the public, is a new chapter f𝐨𝐫 the country’s maritime industry
This groundbreaking project, marks a bold step toward self-reliance and industrial advancement in the country.
It is also a historic development for the country’s maritime sector.
The shipbuilding site sits near the recently established Liberia Maritime Training Institute, is a state-of-the-art facility, named in honor of the late John G. Bestman, whose efforts were pivotal in securing the land for this “transformative initiative.”
Former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf officially dedicated the facility. It now stands as a beacon of progress for maritime education in the region.
Equipped with modern training equipment that meets international standards set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the institute is poised to revolutionize maritime training in the country. It promises to drastically reduce the capital flight associated with overseas education by providing world-class instruction right at home.
This collaboration between international experts and local talents not only strengthens the country’s maritime capacity, but also empowers its youth, creating jobs and fostering skills development.
As construction continues, the sight of Liberians actively building their nation’s first ship symbolizes a powerful message: “Liberia is navigating its own course toward innovation and self-sufficiency.”
