The Liberia Football Association (LFA) in partnership with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) on Monday, 28 April, officially concluded the historic CAF License ‘D’ coaching course for female inmates at the Monrovia Central Prison.
The 8-day training, the first of its kind in the country’s correctional system, provided 19 female inmates, alongside four correction officers, with foundational football coaching skills certified under CAF’s ‘D’ License program.
According to a release, the initiative marks a bold step towards rehabilitation through sports, aiming to equip participants with life-changing opportunities for reintegration into society.
Participants proudly received their certificates, showcasing the lessons they had learned throughout the course. They expressed gratitude to the LFA and CAF for such a meaningful initiative.
Mrs. Jodie M. Reid-Seton, Third Vice President of the LFA, CAF Women’s Football Committee Member, praised the participants for their dedication and perseverance. She also extended heartfelt thanks to instructors Selam Kedebe and Robert Lartey for their time and expertise.
Reiterating the unifying power of football,
Mrs. Reid-Seton, who reiterated the unifying power of football, said: “Football transcends the boundaries of the pitch, it brings people together, builds character, empower people and creates hope.”
She encouraged the participants to take advantage of the knowledge they had gained, emphasizing that such initiative is vital in preparing them for successful reintegration into society.
Adolphus Dolo, Second Vice President of the LFA, expressed his excitement over the successful conclusion of the course and shared his optimism about the initiative being expanded in the future across other correctional facilities, promoting empowerment, inclusion, and positive change through football.
Human rights advocate Adama K. Dempster congratulated the participants and encouraged them to see themselves as agents of positive change upon their release, reminding them that prison should serve as a center for rehabilitation and transformation.
The CAF ‘D’ License serves as an entry-level coaching qualification, with a focus on grassroots football development. It introduces participants to coaching principles, team management and foundational skills for youth player development, laying the groundwork for future advancement in football coaching.
