The Liberia Electricity Cooperation (LEC) has disclosed that it has dispatched members of the management team of the institution to Ghana amid efforts to strengthen professional ties with Volta River Authority (VAR) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). According to the LEC, the action is also intended to connect regional knowledge and place Liberia’s energy sector on the path for further growth and sustainability. The statement from the Liberia Electricity Cooperation (LEC) dated August 11, 2024, indicated that the visit of the LEC’s management to Ghana marks a significant step as a strategic means to strengthen regional partnerships and prepare for major upcoming projects. The LEC statement also noted that their management visit to Ghana aims to deliver on its commitment to providing reliable and affordable electricity to the people of Liberia by learning from the successes of neighboring countries. “The team sought to gather valuable lessons and insights from Ghana’s leading energy institutions, as LEC constructs Liberia’s first solar plant, which will produce 20 MW, as well as the development of the new St. Paul 2 (SP2) hydropower plant and the expansion of the Mt. Coffee Hydropower Plant by over 50% of its current capacity.” The LEC statement added. It can be recalled that the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) and the Internal Consolidated Contractors Offshore SAL signed Liberia’s first ever 16 million United State Dollars Solar Plant Contract for the design, supply, installation, and commissioning under the Regional Emergency Solar Power Intervention Project (RESPITE). “The VRA, which owns and operates a total installed electricity generation capacity of 2,547MW, has successfully diversified its power generation portfolio to include sustainable sources such as hydro, natural gas, and renewables,” the statement added. It said during the visit, the LEC delegation toured VRA’s facilities, gaining firsthand knowledge of the Authority’s operations and explored potential areas for collaboration. Additionally, the LEC statement disclosed that the team has visited the Electricity Company of Ghana, a public utility responsible for the transmission, supply, and distribution of electricity throughout Ghana, adding that their discussions focused on developing frameworks to enhance local human resource capital, with the goal of strengthening LEC’s capacity to manage and operate its expanding infrastructure, as well as exploring other energy partnerships.
