LEC, SENAPT Launch Smart Metering Project

By Domingo Dargbeh

The Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) in collaboration with SENAPT, has launched a Smart Metering Project.

The project is a significant step to enhance electricity supply and service delivery.

The initiative, celebrated under the theme: “Powering Liberia’s Future, One Smart Meter at a Time,” is to modernize the electricity infrastructure and improve customer experience.

LEC Deputy Managing Director for Operations, Thomas Z. Gonkerwon, stressed the importance of digital transformation for the energy sector.

“The project reflects our commitment to leverage technology to enhance customer experiences and operational efficiency. It is our goal to utilize digital systems to improve the accuracy of electricity usage and minimize losses.”

Gonkerwon said the Smart Metering Project will address energy theft, technical losses, and insufficient energy supply.

Nadeem Ahmad, Managing Director of SENAPT Liberia Trading LLC, highlighted how the issues have plagued customers and the utility provider alike, causing prolonged periods of power outages.

“Our collaboration focuses on identifying and resolving these challenges. By deploying smart meters, we can ensure better management of electricity distribution and usage.”

The new smart meters are designed to provide real-time data about energy consumption, significantly reducing instances of electricity theft.

Ahmad described how the system will track the flow of electricity, and send alerts for any anomalies, thereby ensuring accountability.

“Electricity will now be the property of the premises, not the person. This means that if someone attempts to tamper with the meter, we will be immediately notified.”

The rollout of the smart meters will involve extensive community engagement to educate residents about the new technology and its benefits.

“We want to ensure that the community is fully engaged and informed about what we are implementing. We have opened an office to facilitate this interaction and address any concerns or questions from the public.”

As part of the project, LEC and SENAPT will conduct surveys of residential properties to accurately assess energy needs.

The data will guide the installation of transformers, and other infrastructure necessary to meet the demands of households and businesses.

The approach aims to optimize electricity distribution and manage load shedding effectively, which has been a persistent issue in the region.

Moreover, the initiative is expected to create local job opportunities, empowering residents with skills and training related to the new technology.

As the Smart Metering Project takes off, both LEC and SENAPT are focused on ensuring that all Liberians can enjoy reliable and efficient electricity services.

The initiative signifies a pivotal shift in the energy landscape, with the potential to power the future sustainably and equitably.
