‘Lawmakers’ Salaries

House Speaker Richard Nagbe Koon has threatened to slash salaries of lawmakers who have become so “delinquent from session.”

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, June 2, the House of Representatives, prematurely adjoined section.

He decision, followed the reported refusal of majority members to convince for session to do the Liberian people business.

Koon, further warned that lawmakers who are in the constant habit of failing to attend legislative sessions are likely to surrender their salaries for deductions.

He spoke following the adjournment of Tuesday’s session, where he expressed concern over the persistent absence of some members.

Koon noted that the issue of absenteeism has occurred repeatedly, and continues to hinder the work of the Legislature.

He added: “Lawmakers have a responsibility to serve the Liberian people, and regular attendance is essential to fulfill that duty.”

Koon said, the people’s business must be conducted without unnecessary delays.

He further stated that legislators, who failed to report for session, and carry out the work entrusted to them by the Liberian people risk having their salaries deducted as a measure to ensure accountability and commitment.

“The Liberian people deserve better,” Koon said.
He underscored the need for lawmakers to prioritize their legislative responsibilities and remain dedicated to the service of the nation.
