The Speaker of the 55th Legislature, Richard Nagbe Koon, on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, received Christian Mukosa, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCHR) in Liberia.

Rep. Koon received Mukosa and delegation in audience during a courtesy visit at the Capitol Building.

The visit centered around several international protocols and treaties to which Liberia is a signatory, but now require domestication through legislative.

On those actions, it was spelt out that members of the country parliament become a part of the process.

Earlier, Speaker Koon welcomed Mr. Mukosa and his delegation. He assured them that the Legislature remains committed to upholding country’s international obligations.

He pledged to convey the UN representative message to his colleagues for consideration and action when the legislature return from its annual break.

The break began July to October each year as mandated by the law.

In addition, Speaker Koon highlighted the importance of women’s participation in politics. He pointed specifically to the pending proposal before the lawmakers seeking to allocate additional seats for women ahead of the 2029 general and presidential elections.

Koon described the pending electoral exercises as “crucial steps in strengthening inclusiveness of more women participation in democracy process.”
