In a significant shift in the country’s cultural landscape, President Joseph N. Boakai has announced the appointment of Mr. Kekura M. Kamara, also known as Malawala Balawala, as Liberia’s new Arts & Culture Ambassador. This change comes after Ambassador JuliEndee, who served in the role for an unprecedented 30 years, was replaced. Ambassador Endee, who was first appointed in 1994 amidst the Liberian Civil War, became a household name and a symbol of Liberia’s cultural identity for an entire generation. Known for her extensive contributions to the arts and her role in promoting Liberia’s rich cultural heritage, she remains the longest-serving Cultural Ambassador in the nation’s history. The transition to Mr. Kamara marks the end of an era for many Liberians, particularly those aged 18 to 35, who grew up under Ambassador Endee’s tenure and viewed her as the face of Liberia’s cultural diplomacy. Mr. Kamara, also celebrated for his contributions to the arts, is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the role, continuing the vital work of fostering Liberia’s cultural development and international cultural relations.
