The suspension of Central Bank Governor, J. Aloysius Tarlue, by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai in the wake of damning audit report from the General Auditing Commission, seems to be advancing a running story at different levels. Without seemingly taking his suspension likely, Tarlue backed by his lawyers are at the Supreme Court to compel President Boakai to respect the Amended Act of the Central Bank of Liberia which tenure intricacy is stressed and how the Governor can be removed, if need arises. While public debates are said to be growing interest amongst politicians and ordinary Liberians, the resignation of one of suspended Governor Tarlue’s principle deputies has surfaced in the public domain and is generating heated argument to witness. According to Versity Media Company- dubbed ‘Versity News’, Deputy CBL Governor for Operations- Nyemadi D. Pearson, has resigned her portfolio, based on behind the scene mutual discussions and agreements that bordered on benefits she should accrue afterward from government. The resignation letter addressed to President Boakai is dated July 31, 2024, in which discussions with the President’s advisors (names withheld) centered on mutual agreements regarding payment of benefits- pension, severance, and compensation for unexpired tenure. Madam Pearson in her resignation letter praised herself to have led significant reforms on banking operations which she claimed were guided by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) safeguard assessment prior to audits and recommendations outlined in the Kroll Report of 2018.
According her, “In 2020, we successfully executed the National Legislature’s mandate to print new family banknote and the mining of coins during the fiscal years 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024. While serving my country, my patriotism has never waver…” However, critics have surmised that Madam Pearson has deeply been captured in the GAC Audit Reports but she allegedly has alignment with the current governing Unity Party and was advised to resign before the controversial suspension of Governor Tarlue in order to secure her benefits since indeed her tenure is yet to expire.
