President Pro Tempore Nyonble Karnga-Lawrence, has announced an annual donation of L$500,000 to support the women of District #5 in Margibi County, a release has said.
According to the release, the launch took place on Saturday, May 10, 2025, in Whorm Town. It aims to promote female entrepreneurship in the district.
At the induction ceremony of Gibi District Development Association (GIDDA) leadership, Madam Lawrence underscored the importance of women’s empowerment; something she described as ‘key’ to every leadership.
Additionally, she announced the establishment of US$10,000 annual scholarship fund drive for school going kids in the district; with the announcement of two international scholarships to enable young people pursue higher education opportunities in Kigali, Rwanda.
Madam Karnga-Lawrence then promised to build a new market structure to assist local marketers.
GIDDA, a renowned organization founded in the 1980s, is based in District #5, it is committed to fostering development and improving the well-being of the residents.
Since its inception, the association has collaborated with local authorities and the county’s legislative caucus to advance the district’s progress.
In remarks, GIDDA’s President, J. Eric Weah, pledged to prioritize transparency as his administration’s foundation.
“We will ensure that every decision, action and resource is accounted for, because, open communication will not only build trust, but also empowers every member to hold us accountable,” Weah said.
He spoke of the importance of listening to citizens’ voices, a practice he said, will shape policies, programs and interactions as institution’s core.
On the issues of women’s and youth capacity-building, Weah described women as the backbone of every community, thus making their empowerment essential for sustainable development.
“We will provide skills training for women, equipping them with the necessary knowledge and expertise to thrive in today’s economy. By investing in women, we are investing in the future of our families, communities and the nation,” Mr. Weah added.
Weah meanwhile, expressed gratitude to residents of District #5 for entrusting him with GIDDA’s leadership role.
