In Grand Kru:

30 Yrs-Old Man Found Dead In Abandoned Mining Pit

A man believed to be in his early 30s, identified as Wesseh Zuzu, has been discovered dead in an abandoned mining site in Dorbor Statutory District, Grand Kru County.

The lifeless body was found in a water-filled mining pit, raising concerns among residents about the dangers posed by neglected mining areas without the enforcement of reclamation policy by the Ministry of Mines and Energy.

Paramount Chief Sunday Bolloh said the grim discovery was made by two children who had gone to the area to fish. The children reportedly saw the man lying motionless in the water and immediately returned to inform community members, prompting swift attention to the situation.

On April 30, 2026, the Paramount Chief, along with local residents and officers of the Liberia National Police, visited the scene. Upon arrival, the man was found unresponsive in the pit.

A fifteen-member coroner’s jury was subsequently constituted to examine the body. Their findings indicated no visible signs of foul play, suggesting that the victim might have died approximately four days before being discovered.

Following the examination, the body was released to community members and later buried.

However, in a related development, police authorities in the county have arrested three individuals — Eric Tweh, Fredrick Walker, and Prince Wesseh — believed to be linked to the ownership of the abandoned mining site. The arrests were made on grounds of failing to carry out proper land reclamation after mining activities involving excavators.

The suspects are currently in police custody as investigations continue. Authorities have said further findings will determine any legal responsibility linked to the incident, as concerns have grown over the safety risks associated with abandoned mining pits in the county.
