The House of Representatives has mandated its Joint Committees on Judiciary, Good Governance, and Ways, Means and Finance to review proposed bills seeking establishment of a War and Economic Crimes Court alongside a specialized Anti-Corruption Court.
Plenary reached the decision Thursday, May 21, 2026, following a formal communication submitted by President Joseph Boakai requesting legislative consideration and enactment.
President Boakai stated that both proposed legislations remain essential toward advancing justice, reconciliation, accountability, and sustainable national development across Liberia.
According to him, the bills respond directly to recommendations from Liberia’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission and international legal obligations.
The Liberian leader also maintained that the establishment of the War and Economic Crimes Court would address impunity surrounding atrocities committed during Liberia’s civil conflicts.
He further noted that the proposed tribunal would exercise jurisdiction over war crimes, crimes against humanity, and related economic offenses nationwide.
Meanwhile, President Boakai explained that the proposed National Anti-Corruption Court would strengthen efforts combating corruption and protecting public resources effectively.
The President maintained that existing judicial structures remain inadequate for addressing widespread corruption and ensuring transparent governance throughout the country.
President Boakai urged lawmakers to deliberate and enact both measures, describing them as historic instruments promoting peace, justice, and national renewal.
