The House of Representative has received from its Ways, Means and Finance Committee, the first quarter revenue performance report of the fiscal year 2025.
The report was on Tuesday, 8 July presented to the House’s Plenary by Chair of the Ways Means and Finance Committee, Maryland County District #1 lawmaker, P. Mike Jury.
Following the presentation of the report, Representative Jury told journalists the importance of the report and its presentation to Plenary as being necessary because it would enable Plenary to get insight on the prospects and challenges of the revenue generating component of the national budget.
He noted that the presentation of the report is the first of its kind for the House’s Committee on Ways, Means and Finance to make a presentation of a budget performance report and as chair, he will continue to conduct a hearing to come up with comprehensive report to enable the government know their prospects and further prevent challenges like budget shortfalls as was done in the past.
“If you can recall, recently we passed a budget of US 880m which is a good raise as compared to that of last year , so in order to remain on course, we have to work out modalities to ensure that the country raise the money because the country budget is supported more than 80% by internal resource mobilization from within and as such, there is need that when preparing a budget, we should review all processes to revenue generation to prevent further budget future shortfalls’ Rep. Jury said.
However, Representative Jury further revealed that during the reviewing of the first quarter report, the committee noticed a deficit of US 17 million shortfalls but said after a careful review process of the committee, today the amount has reduced to six millions. According to him, if there is no check and balance on how the revenue is performing, the government will likely end up with shortfall at the end.
Moreover, he disclosed that the committee has decided to continue the process of the budget performance report on a quarter basis and in keeping with that, he will continue engaging various ministries and agencies on the prospects and the challenges for the common good of the country.
