The Leadership of the House of Representatives, has cited the Minister of Public Works, Roland Giddings, to appear and provide clarification regarding a scheduled demolition exercise in District #17, Montserrado County.
Giddings is to appear before the House Leadership on Monday, October 6, 2025, at 12 noon.
The decision followed a recent formal communication from Montserrado County District #17 Representative, Bernard Benson, who informed the House about a 30-day demolition notice issued to residents of the Pre-Fab Community, located near the Unity Conference Center, outside Monrovia.
Benson said the Pre-Fab Community has existed for over 45 years, hosting schools, churches, mosques, clinics, over 100 homes and more than 25,000 inhabitants. “While development is essential for the country, the welfare of citizens must remain a priority,” Rep. Benson.
“Evicting an entire community without proper notice, alternative relocation plans, or compensation, would pose serious hardship to the affected families.
In his communication, Rep. Benson also requested that the chairman of the National Investment Commission (NIC), and the chairman of the Liberia Land Authority (LLA) be invited along the Minister of Public Works to explain the reasons for the planned demolition.
The invited officials, are expected to outline any available relocation and compensation plans for those to be affected by the pending exercise.
The House Leadership said while it welcomes national development projects, such initiatives must always be balanced with the rights and welfare of Liberians.
The upcoming appearance of the officials will allow stakeholders to clarify the government’s plan and provide assurances to the affected community.
