The Leadership of the House of Representatives, has constituted a Special Investigative Committee to probe the operations of LITCHI Sand Mining Company in the Township of Virginia, Electoral District #17, Montserrado County.
This decision follows a formal communication from District #17 Representative, Bernard Blue Benson, raising concerns over the company alleged failure to comply with provisions outlined in its Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the community, particularly regarding road rehabilitation.
Benson: “After many communications and engagements with officials from the sand mining company regarding proper rehabilitation of roads, as clearly stated in the MoU with the Township of Virginia, the company has refused to honor its commitment. This has resulted in severely impassable roads for commuters. The deterioration of roads and culverts is reaching catastrophic levels, cutting off access to hospitals, schools, and markets. The situation is threatening the daily access to essential services by our people.”
In response, the Speaker has appointed Alex Job Grant, Chairman; Obediah Varney, Co-chair; Momo Siafia Kpoto, Member; Alfred Flomo, Member; Michael Thomas, Member and Mustapha Waririty. The selected lawmakers are to serve on the investigative committee.
The Committee has been tasked with conducting a thorough investigation into the activities of LITCHI Sand Mining Company, assessing the extent of non-compliance with the MoU, and recommending appropriate actions to ensure accountability and community protection.
The House Leadership said it is committed to uphold the welfare of all Liberians, and ensuring that companies operating within communities adhere strictly to agreements made with local authorities and residents.
The Committee is expected to begin work immediately and report its findings to the full plenary within the coming weeks.
