The House of Representatives has cited authorities at the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) to appear before it on Thursday, February 26, 2026.

The decision was taken during the august body’s sitting on Thursday, February 19, 2026, based upon a communication from Montserrado County District #5 Representative, Prescilla Abram Cooper.

Rep. Cooper, in her communication, requested the appearance of the LEC Managing Director, along with his principal deputies and relevant technical officers.

The decision also followed an incident that reportedly occurred on the night of February 16, 2026, at the Joe Bar Substation in District #5, Montserrado County.

Rep. Cooper claimed that the incident generated fear and panic among residents in nearby communities, raising concerns about operational safety standards; maintenance protocols; emergency preparedness, and preventive mechanisms at substations nationwide.

She described the Corporation’s substations as critical national infrastructure, and that any malfunction poses serious risks to lives, property, and public confidence in the utilities.

Rep. Cooper requested that Plenary be comprehensively informed on preventive and safety measures at substations, inspection schedules, technical details of the Joe Bar incident, emergency response adequacy, corrective measures, insurance coverage, and community safety programs.

In a related development, the leadership of the House has resolved to probe the administration of the University of Liberia (UL) over reports of high graduation fees being charged to students.

The decision was taken by Plenary on Tuesday, February 24, during its 13th Day Sitting of the First Quarter of the Third Session, following a communication from Montserrado County Electoral District #12, Representative Jerry K. Yogboh, Sr.

Yoqboh requested the appearance of UL president and senior administration regarding increased in graduation fees.
