In Mehnla, the lower part of Nimba County, residents awoke to a horror scene of three beheaded grandchildren allegedly slaughtered by their grandmother.
The incident occurred on Sunday, February 22, taking residents unaware that grandma Mary Giah had reportedly, but in a gruesome manner killed her three grandchildren that were left in her care. After beheading her three grandchildren overnight, Mary Giah, 61, fled the house, but was caught following a thorough search angry residents mounted.
Hear her confession to the police: “I killed the children with razor blades and a knife, which I bought for the purpose. My daughter’s boyfriend (not named) provoked me to the extent that I committed the crime. He has on previous occasions falsely accused me of been a witch, but I am not.” The mother (not named) came bearing food; a simple act of love at the break of day. But what she found inside the modest home in Mehnla, a farming town in Lower Nimba County on Sunday morning was silence so heavy that soon shattered the entire community.
On the floor lay the lifeless bodies of her three children; two little boys, aged three and four, and a baby girl barely over a year old. Their small frames, brutally beheaded, told a story too horrific for words. As her screams pierced the stillness of the rural settlement in Yarwin Mensonnon District #9, neighbors rushed in disbelief. By then, their grandmother; the woman who had cradled them to sleep, was nowhere to be found. Within hours, the quiet farming town descended into chaos. Authorities have identified the suspect as Mary Giah, the children’s grandmother, who allegedly fled the scene shortly after the killings. She was apprehended later that afternoon following a frantic community search supported by officers of the Liberia National Police (LNP).
Residents say they awoke to one of the darkest mornings in their history. Mehnla, a close-knit rural community along the Saclepea–Tappita corridor is a home to the prominent Dorliae family. It is not accustomed to violence of this magnitude. Mary is been arrested and taken to Sanniquellie, where she is expected to stand trial at the 8th Judicial Circuit Court. Police arrest
