HoR Probes ‘Dangerous State’ Of St. John Bridge

The House of Representatives (HoR) has instructed its joint committee on Public Works, Investment and Concessions, Ways, Means and Finance, and Internal Affairs to investigate the deteriorating condition of the St. John Bridge.

The bridge is a critical infrastructure linking Bong and Grand Bassa counties.

A statement issued Thursday, June 26, 2025, by the House’ Press Bureau said, plenary’s decision was triggered by a request from Bong County District #1 Representative, Prince Koinah.

Rep. Koinah emphasized that the bridge’s strategic importance not only as a commuter route for residents of Bong and Grand Bassa, but also as a key pathway supporting ArcelorMittal Liberia’s ore transport to Buchanan Port.

According to Koinah, the bridge has become a death trap, with multiple fatalities reported due to its unsafe condition.

The lawmaker said, despite the bridge’s economic and social significance, no substantial intervention has been made to restore it.

Meanwhile, the joint committee is expected to probe whether concessionaires operating in the area have fulfilled their obligations regarding infrastructure support pending report to plenary.
