The slow performance and compliance of concessions has claimed lawmakers’ attentions.

Against this backdrop, the House of Representatives recently held a hearing with the Inter-Ministerial Concessions Committee (IMCC), and other relevant government agencies to address ongoing concerns regarding the compliance, performance, and future direction of several concession agreements.

National Investment Commission (NIC) Chairman, Jeff Blibo, during the session, provided an update on the status of the Putu Iron Ore Concession.

Blibo informed members of the Committee that government has identified a potential investor to take ownership of the concession, which has remained dormant for several years.

Blibo further disclosed that Silver Star, a previous service provider, has requested a payment of US$20 million for work reportedly performed on the mine.

He added that AMR has agreed in principle to settle the US$20 million claim along with other outstanding obligations representing the current progress in discussions over the concession’s revival.

Grand Gedeh County Electoral District #1 Representative, Jeremiah Sokan, during the hearing, voiced strong concern over the prolonged delays surrounding the Putu Mines.

Sokan questioned how much longer the affected communities will wait for meaningful action, and further proposed that government consider establishing a special fund to secure ownership.
