A tragic road accident has claimed the life of a motorcyclist.
The incident followed a reported collision with a Golden Veroleum Liberia (GVL) tractor along the Wedabo–Grand Cess corridor in Grand Kru County.
According to preliminary accounts from the area, the incident reportedly occurred between Big Swah Ylatwen and Gbanken in Wedabo Chiefdom.
It has sent shockwaves through surrounding communities, where residents say, accidents involving heavy-duty concession vehicles and commercial motorcyclists are becoming increasingly frequent along the route.
Sources told this newspaper that the motorcyclist died from injuries sustained during the crash.
The identity of the deceased has not yet been officially confirmed, and details about the circumstances leading to the collision remain unclear.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene shortly after the incident, with residents rushing to the area in an attempt to assist.
“The bike was badly damaged, and the man was in serious condition before he passed away,” one community member said.
As of press time late last night, neither the Liberia National Police nor officials of GVL had issued an official statement regarding the incident.
It also remains unclear whether the tractor operator has been detained or is assisting with ongoing inquiries.
Thursday’s fatal accident echoes a troubling pattern of deadly encounters involving concession vehicles in the Southeast.
In 2020, a truck operated by GVL reportedly struck and killed a pregnant woman along with a motorcyclist identified as David Verla on the Pleebo–Barclayville road.
Since that incident, residents say, multiple death cases linked to similar circumstances have been reported, though comprehensive official data remains limited.
The recurrence of such tragedies has deepened fears among residents, many of whom depend on motorcycles as their primary means of transportation across narrow, laterite roads shared with heavy machinery. The latest fatality has reignited concerns over road safety in concession areas in the county, where pedestrians, motorcyclists, and industrial vehicles often compete for limited road space. Community leaders have meanwhile, called for a full investigation into the incident.
They have also urged both local authorities and concession companies to prioritize road safety measures.
