The House of Representatives on Thursday, January 28, 2026, received a draft legislation seeking its approval to grant Zwedru Multilateral Institute- ZMI autonomous status.

The draft legislation was submitted by Grand Gedeh County District #1 Representative, Jeremiah Sokan.

In his communication, Rep. Sokan explained that the bill aims to create an inclusive learning environment where persons of all backgrounds may study, learn, and achieve without discrimination.

He further noted that the proposed institute, if passed is  expected to align with Liberia’s national Technical and Vocational Education and Training- TVET programs and support the government’s ARREST agenda in the Southeastern region.

Rep. Sokan also noted that the Zwedru Multilateral High School established in 1961, has long provided academic and vocational skills to the densely youthful population of the Southeast but lack it’s independence to fully function.

“Elevating the institution to autonomous status would strengthen its role in advancing education and workforce development as well as empowering the young people for future challenges.

Following deliberation, the House of Representatives  has mandated a joint committee on Education, Good Governance, Ways and Means, and Judiciary to review a bill seeking the establishment of the Zwedru Multilateral Institute- ZMI and  to grant it autonomous status and submit a subsequent report to Plenary for further legislative action.
