Members of the House of Representatives are considering repealing and amending  certain provision of the Local Government Act of 2018, following submission of an amended vision by Grand Gedeh County District #1 Representative, Jeremiah Sokan on Tuesday, June 17 during the 10th Day Sitting of the second session of the 55 the Legislature.

The amended vision which was introduced and submitted to the House Plenary by Rep. Sokan, is the bill titled ‘’An Act To Repeal Section 2.2 Sub Section of the Local Government Act of 2018,” seeking to give counties’ legislative caucuses oversight responsibility of the county budget and development approval process.

He noted that the Local Government Act which was passed in 2018 is welcoming as it seeks to give the local authorities the ability to fully participate in government but , said it also totally excluded the oversight responsibilities of county legislative caucus thus undermining the principal of check and balance as well as   hindering effective governance which he believes could lead to lack of transparency and accountability in the management of the county resources.

The proposed law seeks to repeal and replace sub-section 2.2e ‘approve the annual county budget’ and sub-section 2.2f’ ‘approve county development plan and its implementation.

Meanwhile, following deliberation on the bill, the Committees on Good Governance, Ways, Means and Finance , Internal Affairs and Judiciary were instructed to review the bill and report in two weeks.
