Gov’t To Put 2,000 Volunteer Teachers on Payroll

Authorities at the Ministry of Education (MoE) have announced plans to put the names of 2,000 volunteer teachers on the government payroll as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the country’s education sector.

Education Minister Dr. Jarso Marley Jallah made the disclosure on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, during the regular press briefing at the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs, and Tourism (MICAT).

Dr. Jallah told the gathering that the government has already begun implementing ‘salary top-ups’ for teachers as part of human resource reforms within the ministry.

She highlighted challenges observed during her previous nationwide tour, emphasizing that the government remains committed to improving education.

She credited President Joseph Nyuma Boakai for his support in enhancing the sector through the “One Child, One Chair” policy.

“We want to appreciate the government under the leadership of Pres. Boakai for prioritizing education,” she said.

According to her, the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning has ensured that instructors receive benefits in line with their qualifications and teaching status.

As part of the payroll reform, Dr. Jallah outlined the new salary structure for teachers based on their qualifications. For example, she said, “C” Certificate holders, US$185, “B” Certificate holders, US$210, BSc Degree holders, US$400 and Master’s Degree holders  US$550.

She, however, noted that many volunteer teachers do not meet the required qualifications.

On the recent student protests, Dr. Jallah warned against individuals inciting students to desist, “because the government will not tolerate such actions.

“Students should be in classrooms learning, not being used for political or social unrest,” she said.

She assured the public that the government is prioritizing the welfare of teachers and students, and every effort is being made to ensure Liberia’s education system aligns with international standards.

Jallah reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the “One Child, One Chair” policy, which is being implemented in collaboration with the Civil Service Agency (CSA) and the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning (MFDP).

“We are committed to making sure that every sector of education is strengthened under the leadership of Pres. Boakai. His ARREST Agenda places education as a key pillar and we will continue working to achieve its goals,” she added.

The government’s latest move to place volunteer teachers on payroll aligns with its broader strategy to enhance teacher welfare, improve education quality, and ensure that only qualified professionals are employed in Liberia’s classrooms. By Amos Harris
