Gov’t Snubs Flag Day Celebration

Liberians marked National Flag Day on Monday with colorful parades and patriotic displays, but the event was overshadowed by the conspicuous absence of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai and several top government officials.

Neither Vice President Jeremiah Koung, House Speaker Richard Nagbe Koon, nor Senate Pro-Tempore Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence attended the ceremony, held at the Barcly Training  Center )BTC), and the Centennial Pavilion  August  25, 2025 in Monrovia.

Their absence sparked public concern and speculation over the state of governance and unity within the administration.

Traditionally, the president leads the celebrations, receiving salutes from students and security forces as a symbol of national pride.

This year, Justice Minister Oswald Tweh represented President Boakai and performed the ceremonial duties.

The Executive Mansion did not provide reasons for the President’s absence, while legislative leaders also offered no explanation for their nonattendance.

Flag Day commemorated annually on August 24 since its proclamation as a national holiday in 1915 marks the adoption of the national flag in 1847.

The observance typically features student parades, speeches, and cultural performances showcasing national identity.

Although the celebration proceeded as planned, many attendees expressed disappointment over the lack of leadership presence at such an important occasion.

Analysts noted that this is the first time in recent memory a sitting president has missed the Flag Day parade at BTC

Public debate has intensified both on social media and in political circles, with many calling for the Executive Mansion to explain the unusual absence. As of press time, no official statement had been released.
