Gov’t Cans Religious ‘Tax Claim’

“The information is far from being true, because it is fake and misleading,” government categorically denied widespread rumors suggesting plans to impose taxes on churches and mosques.

It described the reports as entirely “false and malicious coming from the belly of the devil assigned to some opposition elements.”

In his address to the media on Wednesday August 6, 2025 in Monrovia, Deputy information Minister for Press and Public Affairs Daniel O. Sando, strongly refuted the claims, labeling them as “baseless, misleading and deliberate fabrications intended to deceive the public.”

“These rumors are nothing, but fake news being peddled by individuals or groups with the intent to sow public confusion and distrust in the government,” Sando stated.

He added: “At no point has there been any discussion, policy proposal, or government plan to tax religious institutions.”

The government’s clarification follows growing public concern fueled by the rapid spread of these unverified reports across social media platforms and informal community networks.

The speculation had sparked anxiety among citizens, given the prominent role religious institutions play in providing social services, education, and spiritual guidance in the nation.

Mr. Sando assured the public of government’s commitment to uphold religious freedom as enshrined in the Constitution.

He reassured the public that faith-based organizations will continue to operate without interference or any form of financial imposition from the state.

He further cautioned the public against giving credence to misinformation, urging citizens to rely on official government channels for credible updates.

“Liberians must remain vigilant against such fabricated stories designed to distract from the government’s ongoing developmental initiatives,” Sando warned.

He reiterated government’s appreciation for the “significant contributions of churches, mosques and other faith-based institutions” toward country’s socio-economic development.

Sando meanwhile, said the Boakai-led administration prioritizes national unity, peace, and progress, and therefore, would never engage in actions that will undermine the vital work of religious groups.

The government’s prompt response aims to quell the misinformation and restore public confidence amid the escalating spread of false narratives.
