The Gee Foundation school in Fish-Town, River Gee County, has received desks for its pupils after a media report revealed they were sitting on tarpaulins due to severe shortage.
The school, which has over 500 students, had been struggling with inadequate seating, forcing some pupils to sit on the floor or stand during lessons.
Madam Hellen Mansah, a K-2 teacher stressed the school administration took swift action, using limited resources to procure desks.
“The situation was heartbreaking to see students sitting on the ground to learn, something which parents were not satisfied with”, Mansah noted.
Addressing the media, Principal T. Hne Giplay admitted the situation was embarrassing but noted that financial challenges had delayed intervention. While progress has been made, the problem is said to not to be fully resolved, as some students still sit on the floor.
”We were able to managed with our little resources to provide desks for students. And even now the school budget is in-balance; something which will not even allow us to compensate our volunteer teachers this month and months ahead,” Mr. Giply disclosed.
The Principal also said the Ministry of Education had provided over 150 modern armchairs for Early Childhood Development sessions, but said the intervention is still inadequate.
As the school continues to experience challenges, parents and community members are calling for increased government investment in educational infrastructure.
“We need sustainable and comprehensive support to address the broader shortage of classroom furniture and resources. Improving basic learning conditions is essential to boosting student performance and ensuring equal access to quality education,” They stressed.
Meanwhile, the school is hopeful that continued advocacy will lead to lasting solutions, guaranteeing every child a safe and dignified place to learn.
