Grand Kru County will soon benefit from a major fisheries infrastructure project.
This follows an assessment a technical team from the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority (NaFAA) carried on.
The assessment aims to construct a modern fish landing site in Grandcess.
The assessment marks a step to address longstanding challenges artisanal fishermen and fishmongers faced.
Some of the challenges include inadequate storage facilities, post-harvest losses and limited market access.
During the visit, NaFAA officials, accompanied by county authorities and members of the District #1 Collaborative Management Association (CMA), inspected potential locations and consulted with local stakeholders on the proposed project.
Community leaders and fisheries stakeholders say, the planned facility has the potential to transform the local fishing industry by improving fish handling, preservation and marketing systems.
Henry K. Pelenah, President of the District #1 CMA, described the proposed landing site as a critical investment that will strengthen livelihoods and stimulate economic activities across coastal communities.
Beyond providing a dedicated space for fish landing and trade, the facility is expected to include modern storage units, fish-drying infrastructure, and other support services designed to improve productivity and reduce waste.
Women and youth, who play a vital role in fish processing and marketing, are also expected to benefit from expanded business opportunities once the project is completed.
County authorities, who welcomed the initiative noted that improved fisheries infrastructure would contribute to local economic growth and support the sustainable development of the fisheries sector.
NaFAA is meanwhile, expected to review findings from the assessment and outline the next phase of the project in a forthcoming technical report.
