The leadership of Liberia Bodybuilding and Fitness Association, has made an appeal to the government for increased support.
The group appeal follows it impressive, yet financially challenging participation in an international competition.
The call was made by the Association’s Coordinator, Adonis Gbeilwon, who spoke of the urgent need for backing to sustain the growth of the sport.
Gbeilwon spoke at the
Ministry of Information press briefing in Monrovia.
He highlighted both the pride and struggles experienced by the team during their recent appearance at the first West Africa Bodybuilding Championship held in Accra, Ghana.
Gbeilwon said, while the athletes demonstrated exceptional talent, their journey was marked by significant “financial hardship.”
The competition in Ghana brought together elite bodybuilders, and fitness athletes from across the African continent, providing a major platform for international exposure.
Despite being relatively new, the Liberian team stood out, proving their ability to compete at a high level among seasoned professionals.
Mr. Gbeilwon described the experience as “inspiring and frustrating.”
He said, the team had to navigate the complexities of international travel and competition with little or no official support, placing an additional burden on the athletes.
In one of the most challenging moments, he recalled how members of the team were left stranded in Ghana due to insufficient funds.
This situation, he said, underscored the urgent need for structured support to prevent future setbacks and ensure the safety and well-being of athletes representing the nation.
To build on this momentum, the Association has called for an annual government allocation of US$100,000 to support training, travel, and competition needs.
