Fire Burns 8-Bedroom House In Pleebo

…Over US$150K Properties Destroyed

A devastating fire has destroyed an eight-bedroom house in Zone 4 Community, Pleebo City, Maryland County, leaving behind properties destroyed. The ruined are estimated around US$150,000 or more. The incident that drew several residents to the scene, occurred during the afternoon hours of Thursday, August 21, 2025. Although no casualties were reported, owner of destroyed properties and family members, including tenants have become homeless, losing valuables. Gyude Morgan, a local Liberian businessman, quoted eyewitnesses as saying that the blaze began in his nearby makeshift mud house, which he leased out to another lady, and quickly extended to his newly completed two-story building.  The building contained two apartments of four and two-bedroom with other facilities upstairs, and two stores with a bedroom each on the ground floor. Despite frantic efforts by neighbors, who were joined by other community members to extinguish the flames, the blaze extended to the eight-bedroom story building, and consumed both structures and their contents. Morgan said his home was more than just a residential area, but a commercial hub, that contained two stores filled with goods, including auto parts and mining equipment. He recalled how the store that contained auto parts was leased to Jacob Matthews, another spare parts and gas seller in Pleebo. As activities for academic 2025/2026 begin, Morgan is worrying about the status of his nine children, six of whom are in grade school and three, who were planning to enroll for university degrees. “I was on my palm farm when I received a call that my houses were burning. I have lost everything I ever worked for over the years, including the over US$83,000 mining materials, which I just bought. I don’t even know where to start from, because I am out of cash,” Morgan tearfully narrated. Though the exact cause of the fire remains unclear, community members blamed the Liberia National Fire Service (LNFS) assigned in the county for not showing up each time there was fire outbreak. Meanwhile, Pleebo City Mayor Larry G. Geekor, has urged the LNFS to launch an investigation to determine the cause of the incident.  Mayor Geekor has meanwhile, expressed deep sorrow for the loss. He has also called on humanitarian organizations and well-meaning citizens to urgently assist the displaced families. “This is a great loss for the family and our community. We are therefore, appealing to the government, partners and community members for help to get them back on their feet,” Mayor Geekor said. By Langston Joe Wilson, (LINA)
