Fahngon Seeks DSTV Liberia Shutdown

The Director General of the Liberia Broadcasting System (LBS), Eugene Fahngon, has requested the closure of DSTV Liberia due to its refusal to include LNTV, the television division of LBS, in its offerings and its failure to operate in accordance with local standards. This announcement followed claims from Consolidated Group Liberia, the distributor for DSTV, that Fahngon had reported them to the Legislature for not incorporating LNTV. However, Fahngon clarified that he did not make such a report, noting that both he and representatives from DSTV were invited to engage in discussions with the House Committee on Posts and Telecommunications regarding this issue. Fahngon accused DSTV Liberia of requesting a monthly fee of $38,000 from LBS for LNTV’s inclusion, which he stated LBS would not be able to pay.  He also indicated that the PRC Decree that established LBS gives the organization the authority to oversee cable channels and ensure that local content is available. Additionally, he argued that DSTV’s lack of a control mechanism in Liberia makes its operation untenable, while LNTV remains accessible on other platforms such as SATCOM and MULTI TV.
