Bong County Electoral District #7 Representative, Foday E. Fahnbulleh, has intensified his oversight of a concession company operating in the county.
Fahnbullleh urged management to translate promises into concrete actions that improve the welfare of workers, and address longstanding concerns affecting surrounding communities.
He disclosed how officials of the company recently provided updates on several issues previously raised during meetings, and site inspections conducted as part of “my oversight responsibilities.”
Fahnbulleh said, management reported that the procurement of personal protective equipment (PPEs) items is ongoing. Company officials also presented an initial batch of approximately 300 safety boots that have already been acquired for workers, signaling efforts to improve workplace safety standards.
Management further informed lawmakers that a team of technicians will soon begin a comprehensive assessment of the company’s train system. The evaluation is expected to determine the condition of the railway infrastructure and identify repairs necessary to restore safe and efficient operations.
Addressing concerns about sanitation at work sites, company representatives said, assessments will be conducted to identify suitable locations for the construction of latrines. The company also pledged to engage communities whose water sources have reportedly been affected by mining activities and provide alternative sources of safe drinking water.
On infrastructure development, management committed to keeping community leaders informed about the timeline for road rehabilitation projects in affected areas. Residents have repeatedly raised concerns about deteriorating road conditions and their impact on transportation and economic activities.
Regarding workers’ complaints about delayed salaries, the company announced the introduction of a new payment system in partnership with Lonestar Communications. Management expressed confidence that the arrangement will eliminate recurring salary delays and ensure workers are paid on time going forward.
The company additionally pledged to collaborate with a local hospital to address concerns about access to timely and adequate healthcare services for employees.
While welcoming the commitments, Rep. Fahnbulleh stressed the need for workers and residents to look for measurable results.
“Promises alone will not satisfy the legitimate expectations of workers and communities. What our people need now is action, results, and accountability.”
Fahnbulleh said, his next oversight visit is scheduled for June 27, when he and other stakeholders will assess the company’s progress in fulfilling its commitments.
“The workers deserve dignity, the communities deserve safe drinking water, decent roads, and responsible corporate citizenship, and we will continue to stand firmly with them until these obligations are fully met.”
