Health authorities in Grand Kru County have destroyed over 400 cartons of expired medical supplies discovered during a routine inventory, raising broader concerns about screening and verification procedures for medical donations entering the county.
The supplies, reportedly delivered in a 40-foot container as a donation by Senator Numene T.H. Bartekwa, were incinerated on Friday evening, January 30, 2026, after officials determined they were unsafe for medical use.
According to county health officials, the expired items were identified during a standard assessment meant to ensure that donated medical materials meet public health and safety requirements before distribution to health facilities.
The donation had initially been welcomed as a much-needed boost to hospitals and clinics struggling with limited resources. However, the discovery that a large quantity of the supplies had exceeded their expiration dates halted plans for distribution and prompted immediate disposal.
Health experts say the incident highlights the importance of strict quality control, donor verification, and post-arrival inspections to prevent expired or substandard medical materials from entering the healthcare system.
While the donation itself was described as a goodwill effort, the situation has renewed calls for clear guidelines and accountability mechanisms governing medical donations in Grand Kru County.
As of the time of filing this report, the senator’s office has not released an official statement on the matter.
