Former Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor has praised Bong County Senator Prince Kermue Moye Sr. for making what she described as historic contribution to higher education through the donation of the Sumo Moye Memorial Technical College to Bong County University (BCU).
Speaking during Bong County University fifth commencement convocation in Gbarnga, Madam Howard-Taylor said Senator Moye’s donation represents a landmark investment in education and healthcare training that will benefit generations of Liberian students.
She described the donation as an extraordinary act of generosity and national service, noting that it reflects Senator Moye’s commitment to expanding access to quality higher education and creating opportunities for young Liberians to pursue careers in the health sector.
Senator Moye donated the institution and its assets, valued at more than US$700,000, at no cost to Bong County University.
The donation includes modern classroom buildings, administrative offices, a fully equipped nursing training facility, a state-of-the-art simulation laboratory, library resources, a nursing bus, and other educational infrastructure intended to strengthen the university’s academic capacity.
Following the transfer, the institution has officially been integrated into Bong County University as the Sumo Moye College of Health Sciences.
The university retained the Sumo Moye name in recognition of the family’s longstanding contribution to education and national development.
Howard-Taylor commended Senator Moye and his family for making a meaningful investment in Liberia’s future, emphasizing that education remains one of the most powerful tools for national transformation.
She said partnerships between private individuals and public institutions are essential to improving the country’s education system and producing skilled professionals capable of addressing Liberia’s growing healthcare needs.
She further encouraged the graduating class to remain focused on academic excellence, professionalism, and service to humanity.
According to her, the knowledge and skills acquired at the university should be used to improve communities and contribute to the country’s overall development.
The former Vice President also urged other Liberians with the means to support educational institutions, stressing that sustainable national progress depends on continued investments in human capital.
Education stakeholders attending the ceremony welcomed the donation, describing it as one of the most significant private contributions ever made to Bong County University.
They believe the addition of the Sumo Moye College of Health Sciences will expand the university’s capacity to train nurses, public health professionals, and other healthcare workers while increasing educational opportunities for students across Liberia.
The donation is expected to strengthen Bong County University’s role as a growing center of academic excellence and healthcare education, reinforcing its mission to produce qualified professionals who will contribute to the nation’s development for years to come.
