Embattled Speaker Alarms Police ‘Brutality’ -As House’s Crisis Continues By : Feona Benson Kollie

As tension continues build up on Capitol Hill regarding the removal of Speaker Fonati Koffa, the authority of the Liberia National Police has been warned to be natural in the performance of their duties. The call was made Thursday by Speaker J. Fonati Koffa who expressed frustration over the form and manner some officers of the Liberia National Police are proceeding in the House’s crisis.

He revealed that officers of Liberia National Police are state security, as such, they should be in the interest of every Liberian and not a few groups of people. The speaker’s statement is due to the result of Tuesday and Thursday reported brutality by police officers against people believed to be supporters of Pro-Koffa lawmakers. Expressing his dissatisfaction to LNP Deputy for Operations, Nelson Freeman, Speaker Koffa said the issue at the House of Representatives is an internal crisis and should only be solved by them not members of the executive branch as it now being portrayed. He also informed the deputy that if the office of the Liberia National Police wants to take side, then there is no need for their present at the Capitol Building, noting that the Capitol Building which is the home of the House of Representatives is for everyone, Liberians in general.

The Speaker at the same time cautioned officers of the Liberia National Police to uphold the law for the betterment of the country. On Tuesday, Liberians reportedly witnessed the brutalizing of peaceful Liberians by some officers of the Liberia National Police and Thursday was another day of brutality leaving the speaker with on alternative but to engage authority of the Liberia National Police on grounds that peaceful citizens are being brutalized. The issue of the speaker’s removal is said to be undermining the growth and development of the country.
