Embattled House Speaker To Quit CDC?

sources within in the inner circle of embattled House Speaker Fonanti Koffa say the Grand Kru County lawmaker is considering an option to withdraw his membership from the former governing Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC). It is said Speaker Koffa feels betrayed by his party following decision by his deputy, Lofa County Representative Thomas P. Fallah to join ranks with agitating lawmakers holding separate sittings outside of the House’s main chamber. Fallah, one of Liberia’s longest serving lawmakers, was seen in the Joint Chamber of the Legislature on Thursday of this week, presiding over 43 members of the lower house, who had signed a resolution to have Cllr. Koffa removed as speaker.  That body had written the deputy speaker, requesting his presence in the Joint Chamber of the Legislature to preside on Thursday, October 31.  “To be frank the party betrayed the speaker. He’s not happy and is considering an option to resign from the CDC very soon,” a member of the pro-Koffa bloc hinted in a conversation. “Fallah is the real rebel leader. I doubted media reports that Fallah is one of the person’s in the CDC undermining the speaker. For me I support decision by him to resign from the CDC,” another member of the legislature said.  Koffa once chaired the opposition Unity Party and has been working recently to resolve inter-party disputes as a way of readying the political institution for the 2029 Presidential and Legislative Elections. When asked whether the speaker was going back to the Liberty Party, a senate staffer retorted: “Koffa is now in search for a save heaven to ‘rescue’ his position, joining the Unity Party is an option. I would rather advise him to join the ruling party”.
